Sampanthan urges ITAK to support registering TNA as a party

The leader of Tamil National Alliance (TNA), urged constituent members of the coalition to support the process of registering the TNA as a political party, reports BBC Tamil.
The move is currently being resisted by the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), whilst being supported by the other three constituent parties: TELO, PLOTE and EPRLF.
Addressing ITAK members in the Trincomalee district on Saturday, at a discussion on the current political situation, Mr Sampanthan, stressed the importance of registering the TNA as a party, as well as the importance of the ITAK supporting this in particular.
The registration cannot be taken forward without the support of the ITAK, Mr Sampanthan, who is an ITAK member, said, reminding those present of the significant contribution the ITAK had made to the Tamil people's political struggle.
"We never said that we will not register the Tamil National Alliance as a political party. To register it, the necessary steps need to be taken. Our people must accept it wholly," he said.
Stating that the TNA had gained recognition locally and internationally at present, as all the parties were working together, Mr Sampanthan urged that this recognition should be safeguarded.
The Tamil people's problems will not be resolved once the TNA is registered as a party, Mr Sampanthan added.
