The observation was made at a press conference held in Colombo this Morning (10). “This was discussed during a lengthy discussion with President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday (11). If agreed, the 20th Amendment will be presented to the Cabinet on 13 May,” Dissanayake said. Dissanayake also quoted the President as saying that the next general election might have to be held with the existing election system though the 20th Amendment gets the Parliament approval due to time constraints. However, the government earlier said the Parliament will be dissolved only after the constitutional changes take place for new electoral reforms. Dissanayake also urged the police to expedite the investigations with respect to the suspicious death of former national rugby player Wasim Thajudeen. An inquest into the mysterious death of Thajudeen was initiated following the emergence of new information in the case in the recent past. |
