11th Year Commemoration of Tsunami

Eleven years ago, on December 26, 2004, tragedy stuck Sri Lanka and several other countries around the Indian Ocean. The Indian Ocean tsunami claimed an estimated 230,000 lives, over 35,000 in Sri Lanka. Large areas in the coastal belt lay in ruins.
The Disaster Management Centre urged all Sri Lankans to observe a 2 minute silence from 9.25am to 9.27am today to commemorate the victims of the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004.
Over 35,000 Sri Lankans lost their lives in this tragedy. The total number of deaths was estimated at 230.000 across 14 countries.
