Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he obtained intelligence assistance from overseas to defeat the LTTE and former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and also former President Mahinda Rajapaksa continued to obtain such intelligence assistance. The Prime Minister said that countries like America, China and India helped Sri Lanka a lot during the war. He said that after 2005 the former Government was determined to defeat the LTTE and began operations in the east. The Prime Minister said that later the former Government obtained Indian assistance for a resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva were an assurance was given that any human rights abuses said to have been committed during the final stages of the war will be investigated. Wickremesinghe said the former Government should not have given such an undertaking to the UN and now attempts are being made to correct that mistake. The Prime Minister also said that the Government will not work against the military but at the same time it will investigate the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda and the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickremetunga.
