The leader of the Tamil National Alliance, Rajavarothayam Sampanthan says the party will not encourage acceptance or accept members of other organisations without the consent of the leadership, when asked about the formation of the Tamil People's Council.
Mr Sampanthan said acceptance of the TPC, which is chaired by Northern Province Chief Minister CV Wigneswaran, would "create confusion and complications in the future", Ceylon Today reported.
"I cannot make any comment with regard to the formation of the Tamil People's Council. I will make a comment later. I shall not rush it" he said.
The TPC has the support of a wide range of Tamil civil society groups and political actors, including sitting MPs of the TNA.
However Mr Sampanthan said the TNA was able to fulfil its mandate.
"The TNA is taking many different steps to find a suitable and permanent solution to the ethnic crisis. Such steps are not only initiated locally but internationally too. We have clearly included our goal for a suitable solution to the national question to the election manifesto. We have emphasized our goal at every meeting with international representatives. TNA Parliamentarians, Northern Chief Minister, Provincial Ministers and members have participated in such meetings,
"We look forward to stay united to settle the ethnic issue. We do not want to confuse our stand and those who are confused should understand the situation," he further said.
Former TNA MP P Ariyanenthiran alluded that the government was behind the formation of the new body and was designed to confuse people, pointing out that the government was also behind the Karuna-split in the LTTE.
