Facts should be addressed through Geneva conventions: Sampanthan

sampanthan-4-720x480Opposition Leader and TNA Leader R. Sampanthan said, there had been many progressive steps taken by the present government to address the problems of the Tamil people even though certain problems still remain unsettled, He was responding to a question by a journalist at a press conference in Kopai during his visit to the North. Refuting claims that there had been no change in the situation of Tamils in the North since the new Government came to power, Sampanthan pointed out the situation could have been much worse if former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had been re-elected at the last Presidential Election. He observed the country had got a rare and valuable opportunity to reach a political solution to the prolonged national question within this year if all political parties genuinely helped to this end. He noted both President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe show genuine interest to work out a long lasting political solution. “There are issues of resettlement and releasing of the military held land, but it is wrong to say nothing positive has happened. The Government said they are committed to the full implementation of the UNHRC resolution. For that, truth seeking is important. The UN Human Rights High Commissioner is to brief the UNHRC 32nd session in June on the progress of the Sri Lankan Government on the Geneva resolution. The final report would come next year,” he said.
