State Minister Laksman Yapa Abeywardena stated that the government will express its views on the report on the country’s Human Rights Practices published by the U.S. Department of State after a thorough analysis.
He further added that the international community has commended the progress Sri Lanka has made in governance as the situation surrounding human rights in Sri Lanka has changed.
He attributed the change to the positive measures taken by the present government in comparison to the previous regime to improve the rights record.
The report stated that, 11 Human Rights Crimes including sexual assaults, abductions and rape of children were committed by the Sri Lankan army.
Parents and siblings of 3 year old girl who was kidnapped in June last year were tortured by Police on the incident of kidnapping, mentioned in report.
Regardless of the findings in the report, during the recent past, there has not been anything serious on the matter of democracy and human rights in Sri Lanka, so there is no need for fear, the State Minister said.
