Stamp has been released in honor of late Mr.Vishvalingam Weerasingham, the pioneer of the cooperative movement by the Sri Lanka Postal Department on Friday. The event of launching this stamp has been held at Weerasingham hall under the leadership of Aingaranesan, the Provincial Cooperative Minister.
The former parliamentarian late Mr.Vishvalingam Weerasingham served as a principal of Manipai Hindu College. Moolai Cooperative Hospital established by following the endeavor of him showed the way the establishment of Cooperative Hospitals at various places in Sri Lanka. He, who pioneered the All Ceylon Cooperative Society, belongs to the proud of being the first leader of it. He was behind the establishment of Cooperative Banks in Sri Lanka.
Despite the effort of publishing a stamp in honor of late Mr.Vishvalingam Weerasingham, who laid a sturdy foundation to the Cooperative Sector, had been making since 1990, this became possible following the effort made by the Provincial Cooperative Ministry.
The Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council C.V.Wigneshwaran participated as the chief guest on the occasion and received the very first Stamp Envelop from the Deputy Post Master N.Iratnasingham. The parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah, the chairman of the NPC C.V.K.Sivagnnam, councilors of the NPC P.Kajatheepan, Mrs.Ananthi Sasitharan, V.Sivayohan, K.Tharmalingam, K.Sivajilingam, S.Pasupathipillai, Prime Secretary A.Paththinathan, the Secretary of the Agricultural Ministry M.Padric Diranjan, the Commissioner of the Cooperative Development Mathumathi Vasanthakumar and other many others were present at this event.
The photo of late Mr.Vishvalingam Weerasingham etched on the stamp was drawn by one of the greatest artists Mr. Rasaiah.
