Ruling AIADMK is leading in five seats and its rival DMK in two, according to early trends in the counting of votes in Tamil Nadu assembly elections. AIADMK was leading in Mayiladuthurai, Poompuhar, Sankari, Udhagamandalam and Athur, Election Commission said quoting early trends. At Thuraiyur DMK was initially trailing but forged ahead. It was also leading in Thiruvaiyaru. The counting of votes polled in 232 Assembly constituencies in the state Tamil Nadu got underway earlier with the opening of postal ballots. Going by these trends, it does seem that Jayalalithaa will come back to power comfortably, repeating a feat in Tamil Nadu achieved by her mentor MGR — to be elected two contiguous terms as Chief Minister.
