A letter was sent to UN Human Rights Commissioner concerned about the lack of progress of many issues affecting Tamils in the North and East as reflected in the resolution passed in Human rights council last year – such as the release of hundreds of detainees held under the notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act, the return of land held by the military, investigations into the tens of thousands of forcibly disappeared people, and the removal of the military from civilian affairs. Six organizations including International Human Rights Watch and International Jurimar Commission sent this letter yesterday (Tuesday, June 22). There are improvement in International relations and freedom of expression. However, intimidations and threats are continuing in the country, organisations also reported. As the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) meets in Geneva this month and the High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein prepares his oral report to be presented later in the session, the organisations has appealed to the International Community to remain fully engaged with Sri Lanka to ensure that all aspects of the UNHRC resolution A/HRC/30/1 are faithfully implemented. They pointed out that the justice for victims and accountability are essential elements of the healing process in post-conflict societies that have suffered systematic violations of human rights. un-assembly-720x480
