Tamil Internally Displaced Perons are preparing to march with white flags towards lands that have been occupied by Sri Lanka’s military under the guise of a High Security Zone in Jaffna.
The President of the Valikamam North Rehabilitation Society, A Gunabalasingam, on Friday said, the people had stopped protesting for their resettlement after the new president promised in December that the Valikamam North people would be resettled within six months.
Speaking at a press conference in Jaffna, he added that the displaced have now realised that they have been deceived by President Maithripala Sirisnena. Mr Gunabalasingam said they were now forced to restart their struggle to reclaim their original lands.
Mr Gunabalasingam added that Sri Lanka’s government was continuing the 26 year old policy of turning a blind eye to the plights of Tamils who continue to live in makeshift tin-sheet huts after losing their lands to military occupation.
The Valikamam North Rehabiliaiton Society president, urged all media outlets, including those in the South of the island to highlight the plight of the Tamil displaced in the North-East.
