Sinhala Police wants SL Judiciary to investigate Tamil students first

While Sinhalese students are demanding a sub-station of SL Police to be established inside the premises of the University of Jaffna, the police of genocidal Sri Lanka have filed cases against 5 Tamil students. The Tamil students, including the Student Union leader who was assaulted by the Sinhalese students, have to present themselves at Jaffna Court on 25 August, informed sources at the University of Jaffna told TamilNet on Sunday. In the meantime, 4 Sinhalese students have to present themselves on 10 September, the sources further said.

Although the University administration has been repeatedly inviting all students to commence their studies, 60% of the Science Faculty students, who are Sinhalese, have demanded a sub police station to be established inside the University premises.

Tamil students are opposing the move to the establish SL police station inside the University premises.

A similar police post put up in the Eastern University in 2008. Not only the students but even the university administration and faculty members too started facing many ‘inconveniences’ having the SL police post in the Eastern University. In 2009 a hostel sub-warden and two students coming from the Mullaiththeevu district were murdered in the hostel of the Eastern University, allegedly with the complicity of those who were ‘responsible for security’ and their paramilitary collaborators.

There have been several complaints of SL military intelligence spying on Tamil students at the University of Jaffna and student activists have been subjected to abductions and harassments by the SL military. Establishing a police post inside Jaffna University would only result in increased threat on Tamil students' freedom of expression, according to the student leaders of the University Student Union.
