Investigation mechanism should be acceptable by the war victims – UN Chief Ban

Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran said the UN Secretary General had told that the United Nations had been trying to establish an investigation mechanism, which should be acceptable by the victimized people, to probe into the alleged war crimes committed during the conflict in Sri Lanka. Addressing the media soon after the brief meeting with the UN chief Ban Ki-moon in Jaffna , Mr. Wigneswaran said he had noted the UN chief that when he visited in 2009, though he was briefed about the human rights violations and war crimes committed during the war, a mechanism was not established. Replying to that, Mr.Ban said the establishing such mechanism was under way and assured the UN would continue to support for the implementation. Replying to the raised notification of the PTA, the UN chief said he had already urged the government to abolish the PTA during the 2009 visit, but the government has not taken any step to remove it, it is wrong, adding that he had asked the President and the Prime Minister to abolish it and release the detainees who have been kept under the PTA. The NP CM continued to say that he had raised some important prevailing issues such as demining in some areas which have been halted due to inadequate fund. Mr.Ban had said though his term would end this year, the UN would continue to do its functions.
