SL Police continues to occupy private properties in East disproving Sirisena’s claims at UN

In contrary to the claim made by SL President Maithiripala Sirisena at the United Nations that his government had released back private properties, which had been seized by the SL military and the Police in the Eastern province during the times of war, the SL Police is still occupying the lands that belong to Karunalayam, a Hindu charity which is based in Mayilampaa-ve'li, 8 km north of Batticaloa city, says R. Murugadas, the director of the charity. SL Police is stationed at the lands and building belonging to Karunalyaam. The charity has been demanding its lands back since 2013 and has brought the matter to the direct attention of the SL President three times, he further said. Karunalayam maintains a housing scheme named Ram Nakar and an orphanage for children at Mayilampaa-ve’li in Ea’raavoor-pattu division (Chengkaladi).

The occupying SL Police has not been prepared to relocate itself from the property of Karunalayam Foundation despite repeated requests, Mr Murugadas says.

A public action (prayer gathering) was staged in front of the police post on 31 December 2016.

The matter was also brought to the attention of various administrative structures, including the district-level coordination committee meeting as well as appeals to Hindu affairs ministry and SL Presidential Secretariat.

After repeated appeals and awareness campaigns, the SL Police Officer-in-Charge of Ea’raavoor station responded in April this year with an assurance to relocate the police post away from the property before December 2017.

But, the SL Police says it is still waiting for instructions from the office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police.

“This seems to be a time-buying tactic,” Murugadas says.

In a letter sent to Mr Maithiripala Sirisena on 11 December, the charity has demanded a direct meeting with the SL President, he said.
