A Tamil political prisoner detained at Welikada Prison today died yesterday.
His relatives said he died in the Colombo National Hospital.
Shanmuganathan Devakaran, a 70-year-old man from Vavuniya has died.
On 10th February 2008, he was arrested on charges of driving a vehicle to the LTTE.
Ten years later, he was sentenced to two years in prison.
A few months ago, a new case was filed against the Negombo High Court against the convicted prisoner, and he was mentally ill.
The elderly man had been admitted to Welikada Prison Hospital for a series of illnesses due to lack of adequate care in prison life.
He was transferred from Welikada jail to Colombo National Hospital where he died of treatment as he was treated.
