The Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) has urged Eezham Tamils to mark May 18 Genocide Day as a Day of Uprising without deviating from its true spirit. May 18 is a day of remembrance as well as a day of Tamil national uprising, the JUSU said in a statement signed by its president and secretary on Wednesday. The political movements of Tamils world over should jointly mark the day under the symbolism of Mu'l'livaaykkaal Genocide Remembrance. The Tamil movements and the younger generation should inspire Tamils to be themselves on their own terms, the JUSU said.

The international community was dead silent watching the unfolding mass tragedy. Therefore, Tamils have all the right to demand justice without losing their identity, particularly the courage of their past struggle, the JUSU statement observed.

As long as the Tamils stand united to demand justice and are determined to continue their struggle marking the day as a day of their uprising, no force could stop their political liberation in future, the JUSU statement said.

The statement was highlighting the significance of marking the day as a day of political struggle than observing it as a day mourning those perished as victims, political observers in Jaffna said.
