Sri Lanka parliament descends into violence with one lawmaker sent to hospital

Sri Lanka’s speaker was mobbed as parliament broke down into chaotic violence, with one lawmaker sent to hosiptal today.

Mahinda Rajapaksa rejected the no-confidence motion levelled against him and assumed the bench of the Prime Minister in parliament.

Ignoring the speaker’s ruling of a no-confidence motion against Rajapaksa, lawmakers hurled items at the speaker as the parliamentary chambers descended into violence.

One lawmaker was sent to hospital to receive treatment for injuries reports dailyFT.lk.

Unable to control escalating clashes, the speaker suspended parliament amidst flying waste paper baskets.

The parliamentary mace was removed and speaker stepped out.

Rajapaksa loyalists remained chanting in the chambers.
