Tamil Eelam war heroes emotionally commemorated, people defy SL Court orders

The oppressed Eezham Tamils gathered in large numbers on Tuesday as never before in post-2009 remembrance day events to mark the public commemoration of Tamil Eelam great heroes (Maaveerar) at more than thirty heroes’ cemeteries which the occupying SL military had razed to the ground in the eight districts of the North-East. The people also defied the verbal court order in Jaffna, and the written court order in Batticaloa, which prohibited playing LTTE produced songs. Eezham Tamils went ahead with playing the main maaveerar-song, which vows to stay the course of the liberation of Tamil state.

The SL military intelligence dispatched a gang which carried swords on Monday night to threaten the organisers of a commemoration event for fallen Sea Tigers at Chuppar-madam in Point Pedro.

On Tuesday noon armed SL policemen were deployed to block the commemoration event, which was scheduled at the fisheries society building. The people responded by mobilising and going ahead with the event at a separate location in Point Pedro in Jaffna.

In the meantime, the so-called field-bike unit, which was widely alleged of extra-judicial abductions during the times of war, was deployed on the streets by the military on Monday to cause fear psychosis among the people preparing to take part in the public commemoration events.

A few days ago, the SL military intelligence in Jaffna was also distributing fake ‘court orders’ to propagate a false propaganda that participation could be interpreted as a ‘legal offence’. The falsification was quickly exposed as the document was written in broken Tamil.

The SL Police was trying to block the public commemoration at Koappaay and at Chaaddi in Kayts in Jaffna by filing cases urging the respective Magistrate courts to prohibit the event on 21 November.

The falsification was done by the SL military intelligence as the attempt to block the event through the SL Police didn't give the expected outcome.

Batticaloa District Additional Magistrate M.I.M. Rizvi issued a written verdict that public commemorations could proceed. However, the organisers should refrain from using LTTE symbols and songs, the note said.

However, the people insisted that the main remembrance song, which was composed for the remembrance by the LTTE, should be played at 6:05 p.m.

As usual, the students of the University of Jaffna organised a commemoration event earlier in the day at the renewed Maaveerar square within the premises of the Jaffna University.

The public remembrance events held at Koappaay in Jaffna, at Kanakapuram in Ki'linochchi, at Aadkaaddi-ve'li in Mannaar, at Ka'ndaladi, Maavadi-munmaari and at Vaakarai in Batticaloa, and at Aalang-ku'lam in Trincomalee drew large participation.

While the harassment was high in the districts of Jaffna and Batticaloa, military or police interference was almost nill at Aadkaaddi-ve'li Maaveerar Thuyilum Illam in Maanthai-West, Mannaar.

The common remembrance took place at 6:05 p.m. at or near the sites of destroyed heroes cemeteries.

The SL police found itself restrained due to the number of people who had mobilised.
