Tamil political parties and Jaffna Uni Students reject Independence Day ‘It’s a Black Day’


Former Northern Province Chief Minister C.V Wigneswaran's new political party, Tamil Makkal Koottani (TMK) or Tamil People’s Front, has decided to give its fullest support to the Jaffna University Students Union’s protest, that is set to be staged on the 71st Independence Day, Monday.

Calling it the ‘Black Day’ the Students Union is gearing to hold a protests so that the international community would hear their plea demanding justice that had been ignored.

Calling it the ‘Black Day’ the Students Union is gearing to hold a protests so that the international community would hear their plea demanding justice that had been ignored.

Wigneswaran said, in a statement, “despite we earning Independence from the British there has been serious human rights violations and injustice against the Tamils of Sri Lanka. “We see people especially missing people's families, still searching for their loved ones.” He also pointed out that under the Prevention of Terrorism Act many are in jails without any inquiry and prosecution.
He also emphasized on the land grab by the military and that people are being given back their lands despite their pleading “Having such setbacks, we decided to give our fullest support to the university student union and urge the international community to pay attention. This Black Day protest is perfect to suite the environment the Tamils are placed in.” He also pointed out several members from the TMK would be present at the events organized by the students.
Meanwhile, the Tamil National People's Front has also decided to hold a protest against Independence Day and reject the celebration the government has planned to host. General Secretary of TNPF SelvarasaGajendran noted that despite the fact the war has ended the Government is using its military and power and powerful other agencies to create a fear-psychosis amidst the Tamils and imposing Buddhism by erecting Buddha Statues in places where there are no Buddhist settlements. This is creating religious tension in the North and East.
