On the 5th of July 1987, the first Black Tiger Captain Miller attacked a Sri Lankan Army garrison in Nelliyadi in the Jaffna district.
Every year since, Tamils around the world commemorate Karumpuli Naal on this day.
Karumpuli Naal was observed widely in the North-East of the island until 2009.
