UPFA member in shocking u-turn

A member of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), who was scheduled to join the opposition today, made a u-turn after arriving for an opposition media conference.
In a shocking move, UPFA Dehiwala – Mount Lavinia Municipal Council member Savithra De Silva arrived for the opposition media conference and was welcomed by UNP MP Sujeewa Senasinghe saying he has decided to support opposition Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena.
After he was introduced to the media by Senasinghe, the UPFA member took the seat and made a shocking statement saying he had decided he will not betray President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Senasinghe and other UNP members seated with him were visibly shocked and amused by the sudden turn of events but allowed the UPFA member to continue to make his statement.
Savithra De Silva said that he has been in politics just for three years and had followed the politics of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He said that he would never betray the President and attended the UNP media briefing simply since he was invited by the UNP.
Asked by journalists why he decided to attend a UNP press conference to say he will not cross, De Silva said that he felt this was the best place to do it.
He also accused the opposition of simply looking to take revenge and did not expect democracy from them if they win the Presidential election next month.
After he finished his speech and was about to leave Senasinghe told the UNP officials to give De Silva tea and allow him to leave peacefully.
Senasinghe said that true democracy was shown by the fact that he was allowed to make his full statement and was not obstructed from doing so.
