Former LTTE women’s wing leader Thamilini has died of cancer while receiving treatment at the Maharagama cancer hospital. Thamilini had been in poor health and was receiving treatment at the hospital when she passed away today. Thamilini joined the LTTE in 1991, after listening to a lecture by the LTTE, and received battle training in a camp in Nirveli. When Nesmia, the previous head of the LTTE Women’s Wing, was killed in a clash with the Army in Muhamalai, Thamilini had been appointed in her place. |
She was arrested following the end of the war in 2009 at an IDP camp and was sent for rehabilitation. In 2013 Thamilini was handed back to her relatives after completing rehabilitation. Thamilini is one of the most senior former LTTE members to have been released into society after undergoing rehabilitation. |
