Relatives of the political prisoners from Killinochchi stated that the Tamil people's political representatives including the Chief Minister of NPC should not participate in the president’s Pongal celebration.
The relatives of political prisoners, who participated in the event organized by the Mannar District Citizen’s committee in providing learning materials and stationeries for the twenty children of political prisoners, living under the poverty line, stated like this.
They further added that their relatives are being detained without trial for long time. Despite many promises given by many including the president with regard to the release of them, those promises are yet to be implemented. Meanwhile, participation of politicians in the president’s pongal celebration will delay the release of political prisoners. Therefore, Tamil people’s representatives should express their opposition to the president’s pongal celebration instead of expressing their happiness by participating in it, they further emphasized.
In the mean time, prayer for the release of political prisoners has been held there. The president of Mannar District Citizen Committee Anton Sahayam and the relatives of political prisoners participated in the event.
