Perarivalan attacked in Vellore prison

A G Perarivalan (45), one of the convicts serving life-term for his involvement in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, was reportedly attacked in Vellore prison by another inmate here on Tuesday.
According to sources, the incident happened around 7.00 am, when Perarivalan was going for a morning walk in the jail premises. He was allegedly attacked with an iron rod by an inmate following an argument and  Perarivalan, who suffered head injuries, was rushed to the prison hospital and treated.
The attacker has been identified as Rajesh Khanna, a life-term convict in a murder case registered in Senthur police station of Vadapalani sub-divison, Chennai.
The exact reason leading to the attack is yet to be confirmed. Prison officials are inquiring to ascertain the cause of the attack, he said. “We are conducting inquiry on why the attack took place as the two prisoners are lodged in separate blocks. While Perarivalan is lodged in the high security-1 block, Rajesh is in the high security-2 block.”
