The Government today announced that the controversial South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine would be made into a not-for-profit Institute under the Higher Education Ministry and the University Grants Commission.
In a statement the Department of Government Information stated that the Presidential Committee appointed to resolve the SAITM issues had recommended the abolishing of the SAITM and the Dr. Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital and his family would cease to hold any ownership rights on SAITM.
“Properties, responsibilities, staff and students of the SAITM will be handed over to the new institute,” it said.
Accordingly the committee has recommended the Health Ministry to Gazette the agreed minimum standards for medical education and training to be presented in Parliament.
A special committee of with high level officials would be appointed to implement and coordinate the Presidential Committee’s recommendations. And all process to be completed by December 31 this year, it said.
