The Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran hit back at criticism by the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) on Thursday, slamming “irresponsible statements by those who hold responsible positions”.
The Daily Mirror had earlier published a piece in which JHU national organiser and western provincial councillor Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe accused Justice Wigneswaran of being “a hindrance to national reconciliation”. It was also reported that Mr Warnasinghe “challenged the Chief Minister to reveal what he had done for the betterment and to uplift the Tamil people in the north during the last three years”.
Writing to the Daily Mirror editor, Justice Wigneswaran noted that “speaking of the needs, aspirations and individuality of one’s community is neither separatist nor racist”.
The chief minister went on to state that though he could not attend a recent event in Hikkaduwa, in the Sinhala south of the island, “long Messages in Sinhala and Tamil were sent for inclusion”.
“It is for the Tamil speaking people of the North to ask him what he has done for the betterment of his people and not for any wayfarer,” he added. “Irresponsible statements by those who hold responsible positions would no doubt be a hindrance to National Reconciliation.”
“UNHRC sessions may be forgotten by powers that be,” he concluded. “But UNHRC sessions will no doubt proceed.”
