Sinhala police threaten organisers of Heroes Day events in Vadamaraadchi, Jaffna

Unknown attackers, believed to be policemen from Point Pedro station, on Tuesday night smashed the doors and windows of the residence of Mr Pon Sakthivel, a fisheries society activist and poet, who was involved in mobilising the Heroes Day Remembrance event at Chuppar-madam. The attackers had come with the intention of causing bodily harm to Mr Sakthivel and his brother, fisheries society sources told TamilNet on Wednesday. However, the family members who sensed suspicious activity in the vicinity of their house decided to spend the night with a relative elsewhere. Unable to find anyone in the house, the attackers have smashed the door and window, the sources said.

The SL police in Valveddith-thu'rai (VVT) was also blocking people from playing Heroes Day songs and removed banners at some locations, said former TNA Parliamentarian and former NPC Councillor M.K. Shivajilingam.

Mr Shivajilingam said he had received several complaints of intimidation and threats from the SL police.

The organisers of Maaveerar Remembrance events at Point Pedro and VVT have been threatened by the SL Police that they would be summoned to the notorious 4th floor in Colombo for Prevention of Terrorism Act related ‘offences’.

Shivijilingam described the assault and the threats as racist violence against Tamils.
