The secretary of the Federation of the Northern Region Workers Associations of the Ceylon Transport Board Arulanantham Arudprakash on Tuesday urged the Northern Provincial Council to cooperate with the non-electoral politics affiliated remembrance event being spearheaded by the Jaffna University Student Union.
The move by the JUSU students has got the backing of the grassroots organisations, he said and urged all political parties to collaborate without making the main remembrance event without giving prominence to the electoral parties and the political personalities who were not physically present in Vanni in May 2009.
The call from one of the influential grassroots organisations, which is involved in transporting the masses to the remembrance event, comes as the NPC Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran was embarked in a controversy with the JUSU leaders.
However, the political observers in Jaffna said the NPC and the JUSU would fall in line with the public sentiment towards marking the memorial event by avoiding electoral politics from hijacking the memorial event.
The NPC has also been criticised for failing to establish a programme to construct a common monument and remembrance venue for Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance.
