The EU delegation at the UN Human Rights Council said that it welcomes Sri Lanka’s engagement with the office headed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein. However the EU delegation said it would like to encourage Sri Lanka to further increase its cooperation with Zeid’s office in view of the full implementation of the Resolution on Sri Lanka adopted by the UN Human Rights Council last year. The EU also sought views from Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein on how best the international community can help by assisting Sri Lanka at this juncture. This week Zeid told the UN Human Rights Council that the next few months will be important for Sri Lanka. Addressing the Council during its 31st session after submitting his annual report, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said that Sri Lanka is on its own journey towards accountability, reconciliation and durable peace. He said that important steps have been taken to reform the Constitution, revive independent institutions, and restore an environment for free expression and debate. |
